Things to Do in Galle Fort

Galle Fort and lighthouse, Sri Lanka
A walled Dutch colonial fort on the south-west coast, with ramparts, a lighthouse and boutique shops and cafes.

Galle Fort is in the Bay of Galle on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. It was built first in 1588 by the Portuguese, and then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards. It is a historical, archaeological and architectural heritage monument, which even after more than 432 years maintains a polished appearance, due to extensive reconstruction work done by the Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka.

Why visit Galle Fort?

Galle Fort offers a remarkable combination of colonial architecture, maritime history, cultural heritage, ocean views, and modern boutique experiences. Its beautifully preserved streets and historic atmosphere make it one of Sri Lanka’s most distinctive cultural landmarks.
