Ella is a small, relaxed town in the hills of the Badulla district, surrounded by tea estates and valleys. It has become one of the most popular places in the country for walks, views and slow travel.
A short history
Ella grew from a quiet hill village into a favourite stop for travellers, helped by the railway line that runs through the hills. The train journey between Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella is often described as one of the most beautiful in the world, passing tea plantations, tunnels and valleys.
Getting there
Ella is about two to two and a half hours by road from Nuwara Eliya. The train from Kandy takes most of a day, so many visitors take part of the journey and continue by car. From Ella, Yala and Udawalawe are roughly two to three hours away.
