The best place to stay in Sri Lanka depends on what you want from the trip. Most travellers split their nights between the cultural triangle, the hill country, a safari town and the coast. This guide shows the best areas to stay, how many nights each deserves, and what kind of stay suits different trips, so you can plan the route before you choose a hotel.
The short answer
- First night: Negombo, 30 minutes from the airport.
- History and culture: Sigiriya or Dambulla for the ancient cities, and Kandy for the sacred temple.

- Wildlife: Thissamaharama for Yala, or a base near Udawalawe.
- Beach days: Mirissa, Unawatuna or Bentota from December to April, and Pasikuda or Trincomalee from May to September.

Where to stay for culture and history
Sigiriya and Dambulla are the best bases for the ancient sites. From here you can reach Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the Dambulla cave temple, Polonnaruwa and, as a longer day trip, Anuradhapura. Two nights lets you see Sigiriya early, before the heat and the crowds. Habarana is a quieter base, close to Minneriya National Park.
Kandy is a hill city around a lake, with the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and an evening cultural show. One night is enough for the highlights and two is more relaxed. Kandy is also a good stop between the cultural triangle and the hill country.
Where to stay in the hill country
Nuwara Eliya sits among tea estates at a cool altitude, with colonial-era buildings and access to Horton Plains. Pack warm clothes, because the evenings are cold.
Ella is a small town with views, easy walks and the famous train ride. Two nights gives you time for the Nine Arches Bridge and a hike to Mini Adam’s Peak without rushing.
Where to stay for wildlife
For Yala National Park, most travellers stay in Thissamaharama, which makes an early-morning or afternoon safari straightforward. Udawalawe is the best choice for elephants and is easy to add on the way between the hill country and the coast. For forest and birds, see Sinharaja.
Where to stay for beaches
Choose the coast by month. From December to April, stay on the south and south-west coasts: Mirissa for whales and sunsets, Unawatuna for calm swimming close to Galle, and Bentota for resorts and watersports. From May to September, stay on the east coast at Pasikuda or Trincomalee. Our best beaches in Sri Lanka guide covers each one by season.
What kind of stay suits you?
- Guesthouses and homestays: good value, personal, and a good way to meet local families. Common in Ella, Kandy and the south coast.
- Boutique hotels: smaller places with character, often in restored buildings such as those in and around Galle Fort.
- Beach resorts: full facilities, pools and watersports. Strongest in Bentota and on the east coast.
- Tea estate bungalows: a quiet, scenic stay in the hill country.
- Safari lodges and camps: close to the national parks, for early starts.
Whatever your budget, the location matters more than the star rating. A simple hotel close to where you are visiting saves hours of driving.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place to stay in Sri Lanka for a first visit?
Most first-time visitors combine Sigiriya or Dambulla, Kandy, Ella, a safari town and a beach, in that order. That covers history, hills, wildlife and the coast.
Where should I stay on the first night?
Negombo is 30 minutes from the airport, so it is the easiest place to rest after a long flight. Colombo is the other option, but it is about 35 km from the airport.
How many nights do I need in Sri Lanka?
Seven nights covers the main highlights, ten to fourteen nights adds the south coast and wildlife, and longer trips let you add the east coast or a wellness stay.
Where should I stay for a beach holiday?
From December to April, choose Mirissa, Unawatuna or Bentota. From May to September, choose Pasikuda or Trincomalee on the east coast.
Is it better to stay in one place or move around?
Sri Lanka is small, but the roads are slow, so most trips use three to five bases. With a private driver, you can move between them without changing transport.
Do your tours include hotels?
Yes. Our tours include hotel accommodation, and we send you a list of hotels in the category you choose.
