Bentota

Bentota is a well-known beach resort on the south-west coast, about an hour and a half from the airport. It has a wide sandy beach on one side and the Bentota River and its mangroves on the other, so there is plenty to do on and off the sand.

A short history

Bentota has grown from a quiet fishing coast into one of the island’s main beach and wellness areas. Its Ayurveda resorts, in particular, attract travellers who want a longer stay focused on treatments, yoga and relaxation, which is why it is the base for the Ayurveda programme on our 21-day tour.

Getting there

Bentota is roughly one and a half to two hours south of Colombo and the airport by road, and about 45 minutes north of Galle. It is a natural place to end a tour before a flight home.

Things to do

  • The beach – A long stretch of golden sand with good swimming when the sea is calm.
  • Water sports – Jet-skiing, banana-boat rides and other activities are available on the river and at the beach.
  • River safari – Boat trips on the Bentota River through mangroves, watching birds and monitor lizards.
  • Ayurveda and spa treatments – Many resorts offer Ayurveda consultations, massages and wellness programmes.
  • Nearby sights – Lunuganga, the country estate of architect Geoffrey Bawa, and turtle hatcheries at Kosgoda are within easy reach.
