Mirissa is a small beach town on the south coast with a crescent bay, palm trees and a laid-back atmosphere. It is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to go whale watching, and a good spot to relax after time in the hills.
A short history
Mirissa was a small fishing village whose harbour is still used by fishing boats today. Its reputation for whale watching, and its beaches, have made it one of the best-known destinations on the south coast, with small guesthouses and cafés alongside the working fishing community.
Getting there
Mirissa is roughly three hours from Colombo by the Southern Expressway and about 45 minutes to an hour from Galle. It is often combined with Galle and Yala in a south-coast itinerary.
